Fragile Earth: Prawle Point series - where it comes from

50.12° N, 3.43° W

The geographical co-ordinates are very important in all of my work. Sometimes I just title the work with the co-ordinates. Where can it be in the world?

(What is opposite it? Here lies Antipodes, my obsession).

I go to Prawle Point a lot, I have visited over many years, in all weathers, and I love it on each occassion. It is the southern most point of Devon.

When I paint, it is a feeling I am trying to capture, not the scene per se, but the essence of the place, and one's own space within it.

I cite one of my favourite quotes of
Barnett Newman:
"I hope that my painting has the impact fo giving someone as it did me, the feeling of his own totality, of his separateness, of his own individuality, and at the same time of his connection to others, who are also separate... I think you can only feel others if you have some sense of your own being."

If I could come anywhere CLOSE, I would have achieved my goal.

The paintings I produced, have come from these drawings together with my photographs, videos, audio recordings, memories, sensations and just sitting in the place that Is Prawle Point.

My first drawing, I was attracted to the symmetry of the rocks and the space between, i could imagine the pea green boat bobbing about.

What then really interested me was the strength of the wind, and the way it had forced the bushes to grow in the shape of the wind.
