Weather Watch

In 2004. my sister and I began our collaboration, she in New Zealand, me in England. This was the start with my obsession with opposite sides of the world - antipodes. We started a daily diary of the weather, we have been writing it ever since, and will continue to do so.

Rather than a rather clinical factual account, our writing often uses more poetic language so it seems our personalities show through over the miles. When I am writing I always wonder what it has been like there as they sleep, it keeps me in daily contact.

I will at some point progress this work further, but to-date have produced two paintings depicting 2008.

The paintings, are to be shown together on opposite walls, and are my visual responses to the words. Each day is painted on to a small piece of canvas approximately 3 x 8 cms, and mounted on board cronologically.

I didn't know what the work would look like until it was complete, and it is easy to see New Zealand as it shines with bright colours as we endured a miserable year with hardly a summer, yet bright sunshine in October.
